Iran displaying oldest tombstone bearing Kufic script

The Archaeological Museum of Shahr-e Kord in Iran puts on show the oldest gravestone with Kufic script .

The Archaeological Museum of Shahr-e Kord in the Iranian capital of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province has been exhibiting the oldest gravestone with inscriptions in the Kufic calligraphy.   

The gravestone dates back to the early Islamic era and was unearthed in a holy shrine in Saman County.  

According to the provincial officials, the gravestone is regarded very significant in the history of Arabic script owing to its antiquity and the simplicity of the writing. 

There are no older examples than this gravestone in any museums, collections, or published articles, the official added.

Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province is the birthplace of various unique traditions and rituals relative to the tribal lifestyles.

Special forms of music and clothing are noteworthy.
